Michelada

A michelada turns an ordinary lager into something with salt, acid and a bit of fire in it. It is the drink for a hot afternoon, and the reason to keep hot sauce behind the bar.

Takes 3mMakes 1 drinkGlass Tall glass, salted rim

Ingredients

  • 1 cold lager, 12 oz
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 to 3 dashes hot sauce
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Chilli salt or kosher salt for the rim
  • Ice

Method

  1. Rim a tall glass with lime and chilli salt, then fill it with ice.
  2. Add the lime juice, hot sauce and Worcestershire to the glass.
  3. Pour the beer in slowly, down the side of the glass, so it does not foam over.
  4. Stir once, and top up with the rest of the beer as you drink.

The one thing that matters

Use a plain lager, not a craft IPA. You want something light enough to carry the lime and chilli instead of fighting them.
