Patron Margarita
Patron Silver is the bottle most people picture when they hear the word tequila. It is made in small batches in the highlands and it is deliberately smooth, which is why it became the default order in American bars.

Ingredients
- Patron Silver 750ml
- 1 oz orange liqueur (triple sec or Cointreau)
- 1 oz fresh lime juice, about one lime
- Kosher salt for the rim
- Ice
Method
- Run a lime wedge around the outside of the glass rim, then roll it in salt on a plate. Salt the outside only, so none falls into the drink.
- Fill a shaker with ice. Add the tequila, orange liqueur and lime juice.
- Shake hard for about twelve seconds, until the shaker frosts over.
- Strain into the glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.
The one thing that matters
Because it is so smooth, it can get lost under too much orange liqueur. Pull the liqueur back to three quarters of an ounce and let the agave through.
Questions
Is Patron worth it in a margarita?
If you make it properly with fresh lime, yes. If you use a mix, the mix is all you will taste and the money is wasted. Patron Silver is smooth enough that you should use slightly less orange liqueur than usual.
Patron Silver or Reposado for margaritas?
Silver. The reposado's oak and vanilla pull against the lime. Reposado is better neat or in a paloma.
