Espolon Margarita

Espolon is the bottle bartenders buy with their own money. It is one hundred per cent agave, it is made in the highlands, and it costs about half what the famous names do.

Takes 5mMakes 1 drinkGlass Rocks glass, salted rim

Ingredients

  • Espolon Blanco 750ml
  • 1 oz orange liqueur (triple sec or Cointreau)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice, about one lime
  • Kosher salt for the rim
  • Ice

Method

  1. Run a lime wedge around the outside of the glass rim, then roll it in salt on a plate. Salt the outside only, so none falls into the drink.
  2. Fill a shaker with ice. Add the tequila, orange liqueur and lime juice.
  3. Shake hard for about twelve seconds, until the shaker frosts over.
  4. Strain into the glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wheel.

The one thing that matters

It has more pepper and more raw agave than the smoother brands, which is exactly what you want fighting a whole ounce of lime juice. This is the value pick and it is not a compromise.

Questions

Is Espolon good for margaritas?

It is arguably the best value margarita tequila on the shelf. One hundred per cent agave, highland grown, and it has enough pepper to stand up to lime. Bartenders drink it for a reason.

Why is Espolon cheaper than Patron?

Less marketing, not less tequila. Both are one hundred per cent agave from Jalisco. You are paying for the name on the more expensive bottle.
