High West Double Rye is a blend of two ryes, one young and hot with mint and pepper, one much older and softer. Blending them gives a whiskey with both the bite a Manhattan needs and enough body to carry the vermouth.

The one thing that matters
This one can take a slightly heavier vermouth pour than most, closer to one to one and a half, because the older rye in the blend gives it the weight to stay in front.
It is one of the better bottles for it. The blend of young and older rye gives both pepper and body, so the drink has bite without thinning out under the vermouth.
A sweet red vermouth. Martini and Rossi Rosso is the standard and works well. Whatever you buy, keep it in the fridge after opening, because vermouth is wine and it goes off in a couple of weeks on a shelf.
