A ready-made margarita saves you the limes and the shaker. But the margaritas on our shelf are made three different ways, and the base decides how strong they are.

Made with malt: beer-strength

Cayman Jack and Rita's are malt drinks, made more like beer than like tequila. They are the lightest of the three. Cayman Jack is made with agave nectar and comes in a zero-sugar version. Rita's are sweeter and come in big single cans.

Made with wine: wine-strength

Chi-Chi's and Rancho La Gloria are wine cocktails. They taste like a margarita but are made with wine, so they sit between the malt drinks and the tequila ones. The big Chi-Chi's bottles are a cheap way to serve a crowd.

Made with tequila: the strong ones

Always check the strength on the label. A tequila can is much stronger than a malt bottle of the same size.

Or make them yourself

For a party, a bottle of good blanco tequila and a margarita mix makes more drinks for the money. See our margarita recipe, and our guide to good tequila under $40. For other canned cocktails, read BuzzBallz, High Noon and Cutwater compared.

What to buy

For an easy, light drink, buy Cayman Jack. For a real margarita in a can, buy Cutwater. For a crowd on a budget, buy a big bottle of Chi-Chi's.
