The party arithmetic nobody does before they shop
Three drinks a head is the figure caterers plan against for an evening. Ten people is thirty drinks. A 750ml bottle of spirits pours sixteen, a 1.75 litre pours thirty-nine, and a bottle of wine is five glasses. So ten people for an evening is one big bottle of spirits, or six bottles of wine, and almost everybody underbuys.
Buy the bigger bottle
The 1.75 litre is not there to make you drink more. It is there because the price per drink falls by roughly a third against the 750, and an unopened spirit bottle does not go off. If you are hosting more than twice a year it is simply the cheaper way to own the same whiskey.
