Coconut rum is the easiest drink on the shelf: pour it over ice with pineapple juice and you are done. But the bottles are not all the same. The biggest difference is how strong they are.
Malibu is lighter than you think
Malibu, the white bottle with the palm trees, is rum blended with coconut liqueur. It is about half the strength of regular rum, and it is sweet. That makes it easy to drink and good for long mixed drinks, but it will not taste much like rum.
The stronger one
Bacardi Coconut is stronger than Malibu and less sweet, so you taste more rum. Use it when you want the drink to have more kick.
Other good bottles
- Cruzan Coconut. From St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. A good value for mixing.
- Captain Morgan Coconut. A familiar name, with a clean coconut taste.
- Blue Chair Bay Coconut. Creamy and sweet, and good in frozen drinks.
- RumHaven. Made with coconut water, so it tastes lighter and fresher than most.
What to mix with coconut rum
- Pineapple juice. The classic. Half and half over ice.
- Pina colada. Blend with pineapple juice, cream of coconut and ice. Add a splash of regular rum if you use Malibu.
- Cranberry and soda water. A lighter, less sweet option.
What to buy
For a party or a pool day, buy Malibu in the 1.75 liter. For stronger drinks, buy Bacardi Coconut. Always check the proof on the label so you know how strong your drinks are.
